Background[edit]
A 23 second sample of the chorus and outro of 'Burn It Down' where lead singer Chester Bennington showcases his 'anguished yowl'[6] before he and rapper Mike Shinoda showcases, according to Rolling Stone, their 'call-and-response' which is 'all over electro grooves.'[3] | |

The song's working title was 'Buried at Sea' and was recorded in February 2012, as revealed by numerous LPTVs (behind-the-scenes footage) released in April and May 2012.[7][8] Lead singer Chester Bennington talked about the song in an interview with MTV, saying what made the song interesting was 'the really high energy and the really strong electronic melodies and hooks kind of set this song apart, which is why we chose it as our first single.'[9]Mike Shinoda, the band's rapper and producer, noted that the song's meaning can be open to numerous interpretations, with an example being 'what we do in pop culture, where we build somebody up to be the next great thing and then we just like to destroy them at the end of the day, and we've lived through that, so I think there's a lot of personal energy that went into the connection of that story.'[10] In an interview with The Huffington Post, Shinoda clarified that his explanation of 'Burn It Down' was based on the band's personal experiences, saying:
..We're talking about my personal story and his personal story, and there's also a layer of pop culture that plays a role in the lyrics of the song. For example, people build up a certain celebrity or musician or actor or whatever and they're popular one minute and the next thing, you know either they've done something wrong or they've done nothing wrong and there's just a bad rumor that goes around about them and then everybody's attacking that person. That's just the way things are. We've actually lived through that as a band. All that stuff plays a role.[11]
Release and promotion[edit]
On March 28, 2012, Shinoda confirmed that the first single for Living Things would be 'Burn It Down'.[12][13] On April 5, 2012, the band released a series of sliding puzzles at the band's official website to unlock snippets of the song. The last puzzle was completed on April 11, 2012, revealing the cover art.[14] Another game was released, in which the snippets of the song were finally unveiled.[15] A 30-second preview of the song was released by radio station SONiC 102.9.[16] The song premiered on numerous modern rock radio stations.[17][18] The band teamed up with the Lotus F1 team to create a musical racing iPad app entitled Linkin Park GP, where players drive a Lotus E20 and interact with an environment that allows the player to create a remix of 'Burn It Down', as well as zooming into individual sections of the song. Linkin Park GP was released on May 24, 2012.[19] On September 4, 2012, 'Burn It Down', along with 'Breaking the Habit', 'Shadow of the Day', and 'New Divide', were released in the 'Linkin Park Pack 02' as downloadable content for the music rhythm video game, Rock Band 3.[20]
In June 2015, Nintendo of America released the video for 'Burn it Down' in 3D as one of the final batch of videos in the Nintendo Video3DS application. The song was also featured in Family Guy episode Three Directors.[21]
Live performances[edit]
The band performed the single for the very first time at Third Encore Rehearsal Studios in Burbank, California on May 16, 2012, to an audience who won passes from radio station KROQ.[22] The band performed the single at numerous award shows, namely: the 2012 Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Las Vegas,[23]TV total Autoball at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany,.[24] the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards Japan at the Makuhari Messe,[25] and the American Music Awards of 2012 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.[26] 'Burn It Down' was also included in the set list of the 11th Annual Honda Civic Tour (2012), where the band's performance of the song was accompanied by pyrotechnics.[27]

Critical reception[edit]
'Burn It Down' received generally positive reviews from numerous professional critics. Praise was directed towards Bennington's vocals, while criticism was pointed to the song's lyrics. Nick Catucci from Rolling Stone described Bennington's verses as his 'prettiest ever' and concluded that the song 'leaves open the option of just dancing the night away.'[6] He believed that the song is one of the band's best singles.[28] According to Chris Martins of Spin, 'Burn It Down' is 'seared but still high-sheen slab of cross-pollinated pop driven by four-on-the-floor pump and the pulse of guitars and synths irreparably fused together.'[29] Rick Florino of Artistdirect hailed 'Burn It Down' as 'one of the most incendiary tracks of 2012,' awarding the song with a perfect five stars.[30] Anne Erickson of Loudwire praised Bennington and Shinoda's vocals, commenting that the song is 'packed with subdued rhythms, riffs and raps, draped in a sea of atmospheric electronics.'[31]AOL Radio listed 'Burn It Down' as the best rock song and the second best alternative song of 2012, defining 'Burn It Down' as 'the perfect example of how Linkin Park has been able to stay relevant and become one of the most popular rock bands of today.'[32][33]
Andrew Unterberger of Popdust felt mixed towards the song, commended Bennington's vocals, while criticizing Shinoda's raps and the song's lyrics.[34] Tim Grierson of About.com noted that the song 'enrapture[s] the ear..but the words aren’t nearly as captivating, dealing in a familiar love-as-Armageddon conceit.'[35] Genevieve Koski and Steven Hyden of The A.V. Club were both negative towards 'Burn It Down', in which Koski said that the song 'amplifies its mediocrity with its preening self-importance' and 'seems to be competing for some sort of award for Vaguest Lyrics.'[36] Jeff Sorensen, writing for The Huffington Post, thought that the song's lyrical content was 'like they were flipping through a dictionary and put crappy drop D guitar riffs to it.'[37]
Music video[edit]
The music video was directed by Joe Hahn, the band's turntablist.[4] Filming for the video commenced on March 28, 2012.[4]Warner Bros. Records announced that a lyric video would also premiere on April 15.[1] It was released through YouTube.[38] Bennington described the music video's set as an 'electronic pod, full of wires and cables,' as well as stating that the video features numerous visual effects.[17] Bennington also noted the video's similarity to their live performances, saying 'we're really trying to capture a live kind of element with the band just playing just very similar to how we would perform live.'[39] Bennington noted that Hahn pushed the group in making the video – 'And, for whatever reason, I usually get it the worst. I've almost drowned, I had all this powder thrown in my face. .. On this new one, I was sweating like crazy. It was intense.'[40] 'Burn It Down' was used in the promotional teaser for the 2012 NBA Playoffs on TNT, featuring previews of the music video.[41] The music video premiered on May 24, 2012 on MTV.[42] The music video was nominated for the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards in two categories for the Best Rock Video and Best Visual Effects.[43] The video peaked at Vh1 India's top 50 videos of 2012 at #5. 'Burn It Down's video was also ranked 11th of the Top 40 Music Videos Of 2012 by Fuse.[44]
Reception[edit]
The music video of 'Burn It Down' received critical acclaim. Perri Tomkiewicz of Billboard praised the music video of 'Burn It Down' as 'simple yet striking..[it] displays the group's new electro influences without relinquishing their long-standing and rebellious rock roots.'[45] Mark Graham of VH1 compared the video to the band's previous music video for 'Waiting for the End', as well as 'the undeniable combination of the organic and the mechanical present in the setting in which the band performs' of the film Alien.[46] James Montgomery of MTV noticed the band was 'pushed to the absolute limit .. to the point where, when the band bursts into flames at the end, you can't help wondering if they didn't just spontaneously combust.'[40] Marc Hogan of Spin noted that the video 'soundtracks an emotion-wracked live performance accompanied by — you guessed it — fiery visual effects.'[47] Chad Childers of Loudwire described the video as 'a not-so-standard performance piece with the band members in a sweltering room seemingly filled with light and energy that only intensifies as the video progresses.'[48] David Greenwald of MTV echoed similar comments, calling it a 'darker, industrial offering, with trippy sci-fi special effects and a Matrix-y all-black wardrobe palette.'[49]

Linkin Park's 'Numb' is now part of the three comma club.
The music video recently surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube. 'Numb' is featured on the band’s 2003 albumMeteora and features Chester Bennington on vocals. Since the singer's death last year, fans have made it a goal to hike the video's views up to 10 digits, and on Thursday (November 8) Linkin Park announced the achievement via Twitter.
'Our music video for “Numb” just passed 1 BILLION views on @YouTube. Thank you for all the support over the years!' the tweet reads before directing fans to help the video garner even more views. At time of publication, 'Numb' has amassed 1,001,030,597 views.

Bennington tragically took his own life over a year ago. The band's Mike Shinodahas talked openly about the band's future, saying he wouldn't be opposed to playing more Linkin Park shows. Right now, however, the producer/multi-instrumentalist is on the road supporting his solo album, Post Traumatic.
Over the summer, the surviving Linkin Park members shared a note to Bennington on the first anniversary of his death. The message reads:
To our brother Chester,
It has been a year since your passing — a surreal rotation of grief, heartbreak, refusal and recognition. One More Light, Linkin Park's seventh set, is a divisive and brazen statement from a band that already does not shy away from fearless experimental leaps. From the rap focus on Collision Course and the Fort Minor side project to the electronic A Thousand Suns and their remix albums, Linkin Park have balanced an empire built upon pain and angst with an admirable dose of cross-genre dabbling. Which is why One More Light shouldn't come as such a surprise. And yet, the album remains a jarring follow-up to 2014's muscular The Hunting Party and an overall curve ball in their catalog. Recruiting electronic pop producers like Julia Michaels, Justin Tranter, Jesse Shatkin, and RAC, Linkin Park made a pop album, which is sure to infuriate diehards who yearn for the days of 'shut up when I'm talking to you.' While it's unfair to fault them for not being pissed off anymore, the experience is not the same. For the first time, the band sounds happy and content. Though while they may be at peace, their creativity took a bullet. There's a bevy of bright tropical notes and even some 'na na na' choruses, tones that are dime a dozen on pop radio. The group is effectively neutered on One More Light: there's no feral screaming from Chester Bennington, there are barely any riffs, and DJ Hahn has disappeared beneath the textured studio sheen. The closest they toe to 'rock' is 'Talking to Myself,' which has discernable live drumming from Rob Bourdon and guitar licks from Brad Delson. Otherwise, One More Light is mostly concerned with triumphant anthems ('Battle Symphony' and 'Invisible') and heartfelt confessions ('Sorry for Now' and 'Halfway Right') that end up sounding like the Chainsmokers blended with Twenty One Pilots. Certainly, One More Light will find its defenders, but for fans of their past work, 'Good Goodbye' with rappers Pusha T and Stormzy is the closest they come to 'aggressive' and 'inspired' (even if Shinoda sounds like G-Eazy). Oddly enough, the Kiiara-assisted lead single 'Heavy' ends up being one of the only memorable earworms on the album, an undeniably catchy dose of radio-friendly pop that dares listeners to sing along. Here, Linkin Park actually lay out the entire plot of this endeavor by asking 'Why is everything so heavy?' With the bandmembers all hovering around their forties, they've matured and fully expect fans to do the same, taking huge steps away from the n端 metal that established them in the early 2000s. Objectively, that attitude is refreshing, but nonetheless a letdown. From their inception, Linkin Park connected through catharsis. However, many of the emotions presented here are fleeting. The issue isn't that it's a pop effort; indeed, they get points for a brave attempt so outside of their wheelhouse. The problem is that much of One More Light is devoid of that visceral charge that previously defined much of their catalog. It's a provocative challenge that ultimately fails to satisfy.

Linkin Park originally called itself Hybrid Theory, a name they retained for the title of their debut album. The 'hybrid' in question is the overly familiar one of rap and metal, to which the group has little new to add. The guitars and drums lock into standard thrash patterns, over which singer Chester Bennington and rapper Mike Shinoda alternate in furious expressions of rage and frustration. 'One Step Closer,' the track released to radio in advance of the album's release, is a typical effort, with lyrics like 'Everything you say to me/Takes me one step closer to the edge/And I'm about to break.' It might be easier to believe in all this angst if the group members didn't take such pains to thank their families in the lengthy acknowledgments in the booklet, followed by an extensive list of product endorsements. But even without the fine print to undermine its sincerity, Linkin Park sounds like a Johnny-come-lately to an already overdone musical style.

'One Step Closer' is the debut single by American nu metal band Linkin Park. It was released as the first single and second track of their debut album, Hybrid Theory.[3] The song was featured in the 2008 music video gamesRock Band 2 and Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades, and the soundtrack to the 2000 film Dracula 2000 in the end credits.
A remixed version of the song entitled '1Stp Klosr' was featured on Linkin Park's remix album, Reanimation.
This song was merged with another song off Hybrid Theory, 'Points of Authority' and '99 Problems' by Jay-Z on the EPCollision Course.
Live performances[edit]
Until 2007, Linkin Park has closed every concert to date with 'One Step Closer', excluding Live 8, and their live performances at Summer Sonic. In 2007, Linkin Park played 'One Step Closer' toward the beginning of their live performances and sometimes at the end. The song is always played in Drop C#. In 2008, they ended some of their shows with either 'One Step Closer' or 'Bleed It Out'. In 2009, every show they played was ended with 'One Step Closer', excluding the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen premiere.
During the 2001 MTV VMA performance of the song, the band had The X-Ecutioners do an extended break before the bridge. This part was somewhat similar to the atmosphere on the remix, with synth parts and faint vocal parts being scratched.
From 2003 to 2006, performances of the song include a verse originally sung by Korn frontman Jonathan Davis in the Reanimation remix of the song before the 'Shut up when I'm talking to you!' bridge, which can be heard on LP Underground 4.0. At the end of the verse, Bennington then repeats the line 'Blood is pouring' while the song builds up to the bridge. During their Projekt Revolution tour in 2004, the band actually got Jonathan Davis himself to sing his part on the song before Chester starts screaming his part.
On occasion, Shinoda sings 'Blood is pouring' under Bennington's screaming during this part, as is done by Jonathan Davis on the remix. This is half-done on the performance at 2004's Rock am Ring (in that Mike Shinoda only sings the part during the second half of the bridge) and fully done during a performance during 2003's Projekt Revolution tour, which was completely recorded and included as a B-side on the 'Faint' single and is available as a bonus track for Reanimation when purchased on iTunes. On the single cover, it is called 'One Step Closer' (Reanimated Live)'. It can also be heard on the Live from Nottingham Rock City 2003 Live from Nottingham record. During the 2006 live performances in Japan, the Reanimation bridge was played with the main riff of the song.
During the band's 2007 tour, 'One Step Closer' became the opening song of Linkin Park's performances, and the Reanimation verse was removed. It also featured a new, extended intro featuring Shinoda on rhythm guitar. In 2008, it had a new extended outro, and sometimes it was performed as the last song.
For the 2010 A Thousand Suns World Tour, the song was used as the final song of the main Europe/North America set, with an extended outro featuring a guitar solo by Shinoda while Brad Delson plays an extended rhythm section during the solo. Yupptv mogali rekulu. In the main Australia set list, as well as many random sets, the song was the final song of the concerts.in 2017 they added new intro that was very similar to the one in 2007.On October 30th 2017, Jonathan Davis performed the song again with the remaining Linkin Park members alongside former members Dead By Sunrise (a supergroup formed by Chester Bennington himself) during the Chester Bennington Tribute Concert.
Music video[edit]
Joe Hahn of Linkin Park and director Gregory Dark came up with the concept for the video. The original version of the video was supposedly meant to be live footage of the band with fans (similar to their music video for 'Faint').
The video was directed by Gregory Dark and shot in Los Angeles, sixty-three feet underground in an abandoned LA Subway tunnel, that is adjacent to an abandoned V.A. hospital. The video starts out with a group of teenage friends hanging out around a dark alley. Two of them (the male is played by local LA artist Tony Acosta who goes by the moniker 'TonyMech') follow a strange man wearing a black hooded robe into a door which leads them to a dark, misty room where the band is playing. Monk-like men are performing martial arts moves throughout the video. Midway through the song, they knock over a crate, drawing the attention of the monk-like men, causing them to flee the tunnel. Eventually the strange man appears at the end of the video. While Bennington screams the songs bridge, he is also upside-down as if gravity is inverted for him.[4]
Stand-in bassist Scott Koziol can be seen in several shots in the video.
'One Step Closer' is the only Linkin Park music video to be filmed with SD cameras, which can be seen in 480p and is available in the US exclusively on the Warner Bros. RecordsYouTube channel.
